Quinten S. Mathews Travel Award

NCURA Region V is pleased to announce the availability of two (2) travel award opportunities to support travel to the upcoming Region V Fall Meeting in San Marcos, Texas on October 19 – 22, 2025. The Quinten S. Mathews Travel Award for newer research administrators is designed to help support newer research administrators, allowing them to attend the Region V Fall Meeting by offsetting the cost of attendance and travel to the regional meeting.

About the Award

In 1983, NCURA Region V honored Quinten S. Mathews by naming the regional travel award after him. Mr. Mathews was a founding member of Region V in the mid-1970s and served as Chair of the region from 1978-1979. He was employed by The University of Texas at Arlington as the first Vice President for Research. Mr. Mathew’s passed away in March 1982, unexpectedly, but his legacy in the formation of Region V is still remembered today.
 
The Region V Travel Awards Committee may select one or more individuals to award the Quinten S. Mathews Regional Travel Award to receive complimentary registration and reimburse actual travel expenses (transportation, lodging, and/or meals) up to $2,000 to attend the Region V Fall Meeting. The Travel Awards Committee will select award recipients based on their need for support and the benefit to the nominee, their home institution, and NCURA Region V. Self-nominations will be accepted.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominee must currently work as a research administrator at an institution located in the Region V geographical area (Oklahoma and Texas).
  • Nominees should be new to research administration and have been in his/her position less than three years from time of award.
  • Nominees must have never attended an NCURA National or Regional Meeting or Conference. Participation in NCURA training courses and workshops (e.g. Fundamentals of Sponsored Projects Administration Workshop) or NCURA web seminars does not preclude eligibility.
  • Nominees are NOT required to be members of NCURA at the time of the nominati0n.
  • Nominees must provide:
    • Written statement on how the award will benefit the nominee and their home institution, and
    • At least one letter of support from their home institution. The nominee statement and/or the institutional support letter(s) must confirm that:
      (1) the applicant has secured their manager’s or supervisor’s approval to attend the meeting, and (2) the nominee or the nominee’s home institution will cover the balance if the cost of attendance exceeds the amount of the award. Reimbursable travel costs are based on the awardees home institution travel policies and procedures.
